Youth programme ‘The Big Shed’

Our move to the West Midlands Showground means that we have more room and more opportunities for distinct programming; as a result of this we’re giving young people ‘The Big Shed’, a venue aimed at those aged from 12-25.

‘The Big Shed’ will have workshops from many of the artists performing at the festival – for example there will be individual workshops in songwriting, vocal harmony, melodeon, percussion and Longsword.

There will also be an ‘improvers’ instrumental workshop, aimed at those looking to gain confidence in playing in sessions.

After dark ‘The Big Shed’ will become a dance house or chill out zone exclusively for young people with a folk-DJ mixing both tunes and songs.

I love the idea of The Big Shed! Last year there was nothing really to do during the day for young adults and got a bit boring wandering round the craft stalls for the 6th time but am really looking forward to all the instrument workshops now!
I have to say guys, this is by far the best folk festival of the year by far, and I am struggling to contain my excitement!

melanie - thanks for your blog, I'm glad to hear that you are excited. I have to say that I am also very exited, especially about this new venue. The Big Shed is, literally, a big shed. It has a wooden floor which will be particularly good for any dance workshops or dances. We are planning to put in nice lighting and we are going to drape the walls with fabric. Sunshine Arts are organising the majority of the workshops and we have a very enthusiastic man called Izzy who will help look after and organise this venue - he has some excellent ideas, especially about the night time events. He will also be running an improvers workshop for people who want to play in music sessions but could do with a bit more confidence. All being well we are going to put a tune or two on the web site so that you can practice before you come to the festival. Watch this space......
